Hi Families! My name is Miss. Hughes. I have been working in education for over 4 years and I taught formally in a classroom for two years. I taught grades 1st and 2nd and had such a blast. I graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. Go Noles! I truly believe that you taking this step to help improve your child's learning outcomes and overall confidence in education is so beneficial. In fact, you stepping out in faith to support your child in a new way is akin to my favorite phrase in education: "practice makes progress." You are setting your child up for future success in the classroom when you go that extra mile at home. You and I will be a team in pinpointing your child's needs, growing an empathetic work relationship, and being pillars for your child to lean on as we work our way through different concepts during their time with me. I look forward to working with you all! Let's reframe the need for tutoring to model the idea of "reinforcing concepts" and having fun while doing so! Other Tidbits: I possess a Florida Professional Education Certificate and an NYC Initial Teaching Certificate. I plan to make online learning fun by using interactive activities on our joint view screen, share time opportunities, songs, and repeated practice! I ensure effective learning through small assessments, daily check in's, and exit questions. Sometimes, I will include game based mini activities in a lesson. Outside of teaching, my hobbies ironically include reading and writing (which makes my teaching style very lingusitic heavy). We will do hands-on activites, and we will be talking through every step. This helps your child to become comfortable with different word patterns in Reading, or talking through a problem in Math. I also enjoy outside walks and making matcha latte concoctions! Let's have fun learning, shall we! Sincerely, Miss. Hughes

With 9 years of teaching experience, I have had the opportunity to work with learners of all ages and abilities. My passion for teaching started with kindergarten, where I taught reading, and has grown to teaching 6th-8th grade English Learners, as well as 3rd-grade math, science, and reading. I have taught in both California and Arkansas, gaining a diverse range of teaching skills and styles. I hold a Bachelor's degree in English and am certified to teach multiple subjects in grades K-6. In addition, I have special qualifications in making online learning enjoyable and effective. My approach is to build a strong rapport with my learners by incorporating their interests into my lessons. I use colors to highlight important information, incorporate fun writing prompts, and even hold ""story time with Ms. Myers"" to bring joy and excitement to my lessons. I believe that when learners are having fun, they are more engaged and successful in their learning. I also encourage my learners to ask questions and work towards independence, creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for all families. When I'm not teaching, you can find me reading and writing stories, as well as spending time with my friends and family. My love for reading has greatly influenced my teaching style, and I strive to share this love with my learners. If a learner tells me they don't like reading, I work to find books or topics that spark their interest. I always go the extra mile for my learners and their families, and I can't wait to do the same for you!

Expert 1st grade support, built around your child

First grade is when children make the leap from learning to read to reading to learn. They're also building foundational math skills like addition, subtraction, and place value. The pace picks up quickly, and some children need extra support to keep up.

At Dojo Tutor, our 1st grade tutors work 1-to-1 with your child to reinforce key skills in reading and math. Sessions are tailored to your child's specific needs — whether that's blending sounds, building fluency, or understanding math concepts.

With personalized support during this critical year, your child can build the confidence and skills that make learning easier going forward.
